Split - Croatia
A true treasure of the Adriatic coast, Split has a breath of history in every stone. It is a living, breathing relic in modern times, with its ancient walls, narrow alleys and sun-warmed rooftops all perfectly encapsulating the timelessness of this living symbol.
At the heart, lies Diocletian’s Palace, built in 305 AD, the very foundation around which the city grew. Today you can walk through the corridors and colonnades, realising it is not a museum, it is a home. Life pulses through the city walls in the shops and cafes, as well as the quiet corners, telling the story from ages past.
Find your way from the Peristyle, where once the emperor himself greeted his subjects, up to the Bell Tower of St. Domnius, to see the panorama of red roofs, blue sea and shimmering light. Explore the old substructures, the city’s underbelly, and reveal its ancient and more recent secrets, maybe find a dragon (or two). At the Golden Gate, the statue of Grgur Ninski invites you to touch history by rubbing his big toe, and as tradition holds, bring yourself good fortune.
Skirting the palace, take a walk on the Riva promenade, along the water’s edge. Embrace the pomalo style, pause for gelato, a cup of coffee, spend quality time with your friends, or yourself. A minimum of three hours is required!
Split holds something for everyone – take a climb up the Marjan stairs to the first viewpoint on Marjan Hill and Park Forest, and take a path through the lungs of the city. Watch the colours of the sunset play on the fusion of ancient history and modern life.
Split is a city of convergence – where the Adriatic meets the sun, and history meets the future.
